After ostomy surgery, you will initially be on a “low-residue” diet, avoiding those foods that could cause a blockage when your intestines are still swollen from being manipulated during the operation. Gradually you will want to add foods back to your diet (once your doctor approves), and it’s a good idea to keep track of the foods that disagree with you. It doesn’t mean that you can never eat that food again, it’s just good to know which foods will have a noticeable effect on your output so you can be prepared. Download this post-op Food Diary and print out one page for each day. Keep track of what you eat at least until you go back to see your doctor for the first office visit after your surgery. This is a great way to make sure you are getting enough fluids and also the proper nutrition you need to heal well.
