Fluid or Electrolyte Imbalance

When you have an ileostomy, you no longer have the benefit of a colon to absorb fluid. As a result, you lose 400 to 500 ml more fluid daily than you normally would. If you have a bout of diarrhea or vomiting, you’ll need to be aggressive about replacing those losses, for example with sports drinks. It’s important to be aware of these signs and symptoms of fluid or electrolyte imbalance and call your doctor or seek urgent care for the following:

  • Dry mouth
  • Sunken eyes
  • Confusion
  • Weakness
  • Decreased reflexes
  • Lethargy
  • Muscle cramps
  • Tingling in feet or hands
  • Nausea and vomiting
