Fiber, fluid intake and activity all affect bowel function. If you have a colostomy, the symptoms of constipation you should know are:

  • no output for 24 hours
  • hard stools
  • liquid stools with cramps and abdominal swelling

Treat constipation by increasing fiber and fluids, and call your doctor. Try a warm or hot drink, fruit juice, fruit, cooked vegetables, or water.
